SLURC completes 5 day pro-poor land rights course

The Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre in partnership with the Development Action Group (DAG) from South Africa, has successfully concluded a five day short course on Pro-Poor Land Rights and Informality for various sectors, including the government, Non-governmental Organisations, Civil Society, students, Community residents and youth groups. The event took place at the YMCA hall in Freetown from the 20th to the 24th of March 2018 and was facilitated by Helen Rourke and Crystal West from the Development Action Group with co-facilitation by Dr. Joseph Macarthy and Braima Koroma both Co-Directors at the Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre.

The aim of the short course is to strengthen the capacity of the Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre and partners including local and national government and civil society stakeholders and community leaders to implement a programme of pro poor land rights in two informal settlements in Freetown, in turn significantly enhancing the security of tenure for households against eviction, unlocking community and households agency to incrementally formalize the settlement and improve service delivery.

Modules covered during the course includes, Tenure Security, Community Land Administration, Participatory Enumeration and Mapping, Community Action Planning, Sierra Leone National Land Policy, and Participatory Tool kit.

The course was climaxed with the presentation of certificates to the various participants who expressed gratitude to the Sierra Leone Urban Research Centre and the Development Action Group for the knowledge gained and capacity building on community land administration.
