Flood Risk Assessment and Management Plan for the Secondary Cities of Sierra Leone
The cities of Bo, Makeni, Bonthe, Kenema, Koidu New Sembehun, Port Loko, Waterloo and Lungi area
About this project
This project to develop flood risk assessments and flood risk management plans for the secondary cities of Sierra Leone is led by A.R.S. Progetti and SLURC together with SWS Consulting Engineering, and HR Wallingford are the sub-consultant.
We adopt a multi-disciplinary approach that integrates technical engineering aspects with climatic, socio-cultural, economic and environmental aspects.
The overall objective of the project is to provide a solid baseline of flood risk information and data to support the Government of Sierra Leone and Local Authorities to plan and build more resilient and sustainable cities. The secondary cities concerned include: Makeni, Kenema, Bo, Koidu New Sembehun, Waterloo, Port Loko, Bonthe and Lungi area.
Activities for the project include Data collection and review, Stakeholders’ consultations; Acquisition of high-resolution imagery and DTMs; Hydrological analysis and climate change analysis; Flood hazard modelling; Exposure and Vulnerability analysis for each city; Flood risk assessment and mapping; GIS database implementation and web-based flood risk management tool; Flood risk management plans; Training and capacity building.
The Acquisition of high-resolution imagery and DTMs involves a LiDAR survey when a plane with laser flies over the named cities to capture imagery.
Funded by The World Bank
