ICL Learning Alliance
The Imperial College London/SLURC Learning Alliance, in collaboration with the University of Namibia, explores how nature-based solutions can strengthen climate resilience in Freetown’s informal settlements. This alliance focuses on co-developing strategies that enhance urban ecosystems, reduce disaster risks, and improve community well-being.
As part of the FLOURISH Project, students and researchers engage in participatory fieldwork, including transect walks, mapping, household surveys, and workshops with community members. A highlight of the collaboration was the “Freetown 2030+” Scenario Planning Workshop, where over 36 stakeholders from government, academia, and civil society envisioned greener, more equitable futures for the city.
The alliance’s work highlights the importance of integrating land tenure reform, ecosystem restoration, and participatory governance to avoid climate and planning crises, ensuring that adaptation strategies truly reflect the lived realities of Freetown’s residents.
