CONNECTED CITIES: Beyond the networked city

About this project
Beyond the Networked City overarching vision is to improve the delivery of water, sanitation and energy services to poor and marginalised communities by developing and testing a mixed economy model of on-grid and off-grid systems in Freetown, Kampala, Uganda. Both on-grid and off-grid systems should provide users with the same level of safety and adequacy of service.

The specific objectives aim to
  • Understand how urban communities currently access services and the mix of on-grid and off-grid services used.
  • Understand the challenges in expanding access to formal on-grid services to marginalised populations both currently and in the future.
  • To identify an appropriate mix of on-grid and off-grid services that can be applied at local levels and inform municipal-wide planning.
  • Identify and test interventions that can improve access to and the quality of water, sanitation and energy services
